On Tuesday 16th February a group of teachers, parents and students returned to the Jan Hus Church on the Upper East Side to lend a hand. For those of you who might not know, in addition to a homeless advocacy centre, the church also runs a dinner service every Tuesday night for those in need. This dinner service is very popular and as such they need volunteers to both serve up the food and also to help serve and clear the tables.
This time the British International School fielded a great team of volunteers: Avery Widen and her mother (who was also our intrepid photographer) and also Sophia Snidanko and her mother gave up the Tuesday night of their vacation to lend a hand. Staff from our school also put in a great show, in addition to myself, there was also Miss Turner from Year Two (who is very good at packaging up gift bags) and Miss Roca from the Nursery. I think that all the adults would agree that both Avery and Sophia did a superb job helping out wherever they could.
Helping out at Jan Hus remains an intensely rewarding and satisfying experience. A fact that struck us all was that the people being served at the shelter represented so many different faces of our community - the young, the old, the homeless and those who are in a home but have simply run out of money by the end of the month. I would like to whole heartedly thank those who gave up their time to help others.
