Modern Languages
At The British International School of New York we believe that language is at the heart of student learning. Fundamental to thinking, communicating and self expression, language permeates all aspects of the curriculum. It drives learning, understanding and appreciation of others
We believe language is a basic tool of communication that crosses all the traditional disciplines; a means of assimilating our own cultural identity, building new perspectives and developing intercultural awareness. Through language instruction we cultivate curiosity as well as an appreciation of the richness and variety of language in our diverse world.
Language exploration allows students to develop conceptual understanding. It also becomes a tool that allows them to think independently in order to become responsible and effective citizens of our multilingual world.
We believe that the opportunity to learn more than one language can enhance cognitive development and help facilitate international understanding. We believe that the development of world languages which reflects our student population is crucial for maintaining cultural identity, emotional stability, a global focus and also fosters international-mindedness in our school community and beyond.
All students at BIS-NY experience an enriched language programme in which English is the medium of instruction.
French is taught as an additional language from the age of three and Advanced French is available at different year levels for any students that may have already acquired some competency in the language.
Additional languages such as Mandarin, Italian, and Spanish are available as After-School options to all students.
